Nihar received his PhD from the EECS department at the University of California, Berkeley in 2017. His thesis received the 2017 David J. Sakrison Memorial Prize from EECS Berkeley for "truly outstanding and innovative research". He is also a recipient of the Microsoft Research PhD Fellowship 2014-16, the Berkeley Fellowship 2011-13, the IEEE Data Storage Best Paper and Best Student Paper Awards for the years 2011/2012, the SVC Aiya Medal from the Indian Institute of Science for the best master’s thesis, and an Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor award at UC Berkeley in 2016. Nihar's favorite sport is kite fighting. He is recently also excitedly playing lots of ultimate frisbee.
