CSD DEI Annual Summaries The DEI committee is happy to report on the following actions carried out and milestones achieved since August 2020 across CSD. Increasing the Diversity of the CSD Community Data Collection 2020-21 Collected data on diversity in our PhD program (admissions and placement for women and URMs). Collected data on diversity of our faculty (hiring, placement, and retention for women and URMs). Activities & Implementation 2020-21 Expanded participation in the Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing Conference and the Grace Hopper Celebration. Reached out to recruiting fair attendees to encourage them to apply for the PhD program and to offer them targeted advice on their applications. Worked with SCS to create the new fee waiver program for graduate admissions, which automatically exempts members of diversity-promoting organizations from application fees. Participation in the SCS LEAP Alliance partnership. Connecting students seeking advice about MS/PhD programs and applications to CMU volunteers. Setting up our Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program and expanding participation in current REU opportunities with research adjacent programs. Investigating options and soliciting funding for a research-focused MS program. Expanding our committee to include alumni from URM groups. Developing new and improved rubric-driven admissions and hiring processes. Data Collection 2021-22 Benchmarking diversity in our PhD program against our peers Activities & Implementation 2021-22 Continued participation in the Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing Conference and the Grace Hopper Celebration. Participation in the SCS LEAP Alliance partnership. Deployed a new rubric-driven approach to PhD admissions. Deployed a new rubric-driven approach to faculty hiring. Held a well-received networking event to attract more women to competitive programming, which subsequently increased the female enrollment in CSD’s competitive programming course. CSD students leading the CMU CyLab Cryptography Seminar increased the diversity of invited speakers. Improving the Environment for Members of the Community Data Collection - 2020-21 Obtained CSD-specific results from university-wide climate surveys. Collected results of Graduate Student Review DEI-related supplemental questions. Collected exit-survey responses. Activities and Implementation 2020-21 Contributed to the design and deployment a new DEI training course for all incoming PhD students in CSD - 15-996 (S21 Pilot). Created a new reporting process whereby students, faculty and staff can report DEI-related infractions against themselves or others. Improving reporting and accountability for all people in CSD. Adding DEI-related supplemental questions to the Doctoral Student Review (evaluation) form. Contributors to the organization of the SCS Seminar on DEI. Data Collection 2021-22 Launched a study of what factors lead CMU students to pursue research positions after they graduate. Activities and Implementation 2021-22 CSD students received a Graduate Student Service Award for their leadership of and contributions to the design and deployment of a new DEI course for incoming PhD students. Further improved a new reporting process whereby students, faculty and staff can report DEI-related infractions against themselves or others. Disseminated guidelines on how CSD and SCS should communicate about reports of DEI-related incidents in our community Organized the launch of a weekly Women@SCS Lunch for PhD Students Co-organizing the Young Architect Workshop 2023, which mentors junior graduate students and research-active undergraduate students studying computer architecture and related fields Created a mock-interview process for helping PhD students prepare for jobs in academia Improving DEI beyond CMU Activities and Implementation 2021-22 Directed the CS Academy project, with the primary goal of bridging equity divides in CS high school education by providing free curriculum and free teacher training and support. To date, we have other 236k student accounts created, and 13k teacher and mentor accounts. A large fraction of students come from low-income families. We also have a Spanish-language version and we are poised to rapidly expand in Central and South America. Helping local girl scout troops earn their Cybersecurity merit badges.
