CMIST: Scientists and Strategists Series - Jonas Sandbrink February 17, 2025 5:00pm — 6:30pm Location: In Person - Grand Room, Posner Hall 340 Speaker: JONAS SANDBRINK, Workstream Lead , UK AI Safety Institute https://jonassandbrink.com/ Join CMIST for a discussion with Jonas Sandbrink on how humanity is developing increasingly impactful technologies and scientific insights. Whether it's large language models, the ability to engineer viruses for delivering genetic material, or a detailed understanding of potential pandemic pathogens, these advancements promise significant societal benefits. However, they also pose risks of unprecedented harm if misused. Dr. Sandbrink will explore how the dynamics of misuse risks and benefits scale across different types of technologies and insights. He will discuss how scientists, technology developers, and policymakers can consider the unique properties of various technologies to maximize their positive impact. This event will explore how, by fostering risk-sensitive innovation, we can help unlock the tremendous benefits of new technologies while safeguarding humanity from potential downsides. — Jonas Sandbrink is a Workstream Lead at the UK AI Safety Institute.
